Gianni Motta, forever young champion

“Handsome, blonde and blessed at the beginning, Gianni Motta became a well known rider. His career had Its share of highlights, Ormezzano wrote. Born in Cassano d’Adda (Mi) in 1943, Gianni Motta went professional at only 21 and in 1964 won the Giro d’Italia stage to Biella. He was expected to do well and with seventy amateur wins his arrivakl among the pros had success written all over It. Motta came fifth in that Giro d’Italia, behind Anquetil, Zilioli, De Rosso and Adorni. In 1964, he also won Coppa Bernocchi and Gran Premio Molteni, with the Giro di Lombardia at the end of the season. He was soon in the break, with Van Looy and Simpson. He attacked solo, stayed away and won in Como with two minutes on Preziosi. No rider had won Lombardia solo for fifteen years. That siccess was enough to proclaim young Motta a champion.
