Seven days after winning the national time trial title, UAE Team ADQ rider Safiya Alsayegh confirmed her status as UAE national champion in the Women's Elite road race.

For another year the 20-year-old from Dubai will be able to wear the jersey with the flag of her country, a particular emotion especially this year when she became the first woman cyclist from the UAE to enter in the UCI Women's World Tour.

At the beginning of the season Safiya Alsayegh had declared that the first goals of her new season were to reconfirm herself at the National Championships and she has fulfilled the predictions collecting, within a week, two beautiful and important victories for her and for the team. UAE Team ADQ now has six wins in total this season, in just over a month of races.

The race took place in Sharjah over a distance of 45 kilometres. Safiya Alsayeh left behind Sheikha Issa of Al Nasr Club, second, and Huda Hussein of Abu Dhabi Club, third. Present to honour the UAE Team ADQ athlete were the Secretary General of the UAE Cycling Federation, Yasser Al Doukhi, with Khuloud Al Dhaheri, Councillor and Chairman of the Women's Cycling Committee.

Safiya Alsayegh said: “I'm very happy to come away with double UAE champion title for both ITT and the road race for two years in a row. The national championships got stopped due to covid for two years and it was exciting to be able to race for the title once again. It was also very satisfying to see how a lot of girls progressed. The race for me went very well. I was happy and thankful to have great legs for the race. The race was of three laps and I tried with an attack just before the third lap and it was a successful attack leading to a breakaway. My former teammate followed my attack and we had a final attack with a sprint for the finish line. I’m very happy to come home with the win and to have defended my title”.
