Colnago size guide: find the right size for you.

Stories

Choosing the right size is one of the most crucial steps when purchasing a new bicycle, especially if it’s a Colnago.

The ideal size ensures comfort, safety, and maximum performance. Conversely, an incorrectly fitted frame can cause muscle discomfort and compromise handling, preventing you from fully enjoying the unique riding experience that only a Colnago can offer.

With this guide, you'll learn how to choose the right size for our flagship bicycles, including the C72, V5Rs, Y1Rs, GX-4, TT2 and Steelnovo.

Why is correct posture crucial (and how does it differ between models)?

A frame's geometry determines the rider's position and, consequently, their aerodynamic and pedaling efficiency. Every Colnago is designed for a specific purpose:

  • C Series and Steelnovo: Designed for those seeking an icon. They offer a balanced and comfortable position, perfect for long distances, accompanied by timeless style.

  • V5Rs: The perfect balance between lightness and aggression. It's the ultimate all-rounder, designed for those who want to dominate both big climbs and final sprints.

  • Gravel: It features a slightly shortened top tube and a higher stack. This combination guarantees stability and total control on dirt roads and gravel trails.

  • Y1Rs: Revolutionizes the concept of an aero bike. The geometry extends the reach to allow the cyclist to crouch and slice through the air, maximizing speed on flat sections with a more demanding setup.

  • TT2: It pushes every concept of aerodynamics to the limit. It pushes performance to the limit, requiring the flexibility and biomechanical adaptation of true time trial professionals.

Whatever your dream, whether it unfolds on asphalt, natural trails, cobblestones, or against the clock, Colnago has the geometrically perfect frame to make it happen.

What measurements are needed to avoid mistakes?

Unlike many modern manufacturers who use standard sizes (S, M, L), Colnago remains faithful to the tradition of Italian sizing. This means that the indicated size (for example, 485) historically refers to the length of the tube between the bottom bracket and the top of the seat tube (expressed in millimeters).

However, with the introduction of modern, compact frames, the essential data to analyze in the geometry table has become four:

Stack: The vertical height between the center of the bottom bracket and the top of the head tube. It determines how tall your torso will be.

Reach: The horizontal distance between the bottom bracket and the head tube. It determines how far you will be "stretched" towards the handlebars.

Top tube length (virtual): Essential for understanding the space available for moving the center of gravity.

Head tube height: Directly affects neck and back comfort.

To begin, you will need two fundamental anthropometric data: your total height and your inseam measurement (the inside length of your leg, to be measured strictly barefoot and keeping your pelvis straight).

Sizing and Configuration Overview

The geometry charts for the C, V, Steelnovo, Gravel, and TT Series correlate the rider's height with the four key values listed above. Check out our official sizing guide and the specific details at the following links:

Still not sure? Advice from the Colnago experts

If your measurements fall exactly between two sizes, the choice depends on your riding style and flexibility:

Choose the smaller size if you're looking for a more agile, responsive ride and a lower, more aerodynamic torso position.

Choose the larger size if you prefer greater stability and a more relaxed back position, reducing the need for excessive spacers under the handlebars.

The ultimate tip? Always compare the stack and reach of your current bike (which you're already comfortable with) with those of the new Colnago frame to understand exactly how your riding position will change.
